LAUNCESTON primary school students received an opportunity to showcase their imagination in a Lego building competition at Brixhibition.

Brixhibition volunteer Ray Mcnamara said the standard from pupils had improved over the years. “It’s absolutely amazing what 8 to 10 year old kids are producing,” he said.
“My favourite is the model of the Beaconsfield mine.”

Winners of the competition included Zahn Balyn of Summerdale Primary School, Zara Richman of Scotch Oakburn and Naill Swain of Exeter Primary School.

Mr McNamara also displayed his robot engineered collection of Lego, inspiring children with aspirations in engineering.

Students from the FIRST LEGO League competition received an opportunity to display their achievements. The competition allows upper-primary and lower-secondary students to build and program their own robot. Each year, students receive a different theme for their projects, such as natural disasters and senior citizens.

“It encourages engineering skills, software skills, communication skills, because they’ve also got to do a project about what they’ve done,” he said. His son, Anthony McNamara, 10, agreed. “I’ve learned how to program the robots,” he said. “I want to be a computer engineer and work as a teacher.”

Brixhibition took place on Saturday and Sunday at the Royal Albert Hall.
