LEGO Technic Compatible Helical Gears    Send article as PDF
The teeth on helical gears are cut at an angle to the face of the gear. When two teeth on a helical gear system engage, the contact starts at one end of the tooth and gradually spreads as the gears rotate, until the two teeth are in full engagement. This gradual engagement makes helical gears operate much more smoothly and quietly than spur gears. For this reason, helical gears are used in almost all car transmissions.

Helical Gears

One interesting thing about helical gears is that if the angles of the gear teeth are correct, they can be mounted on perpendicular shafts, adjusting the rotation angle by 90 degrees.

Technic Helical Gears set

Shadocko has designed this set of 12 LEGO Technic-compatible Helical Gears comprising:

  • 4 left-handed 8-teeth helical gears (median diameter of 1 LEGO brick)
  • 4 right-handed 8-teeth helical gears (median diameter of 1 LEGO brick)
  • 2 left-handed 16-teeth helical gears (median diameter of 2 LEGO bricks)
  • 2 right-handed 16-teeth helical gears (median diameter of 2 LEGO bricks)

You can purchase this set of LEGO Technic Helical Gears made from Black, Strong & Flexible nylon plastic with a matte finish and slight grainy feel for just US$14.58.

NOTE: The gears showcased in the video are revision 1, which did not have the same number of teeth.
Shadocko‘s new gears work even better!

Helical gears with opposed helix directions can mesh together with parallel axles, just like spur gears.

Helical gears with the same helix direction mesh together with perpendicular – but not intersecting – axles, a little bit like how an official LEGO worm gear can mesh with a spur gear. However, unlike a worm only being able to transmit torque to a spur gear and not the other way around, power can be transmitted both ways with Helical Gears. This allows for many new possibilities with LEGO Technic design.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Shadocko says the plastic will have to wear a little bit before the gears can mesh really smoothly. To achieve that, one has to help the gears rotate together by hand at first, then run the mechanism for some time. This has to be done for both directions.
