An Evandale-based robotics team has received a welcome boost ahead of the FIRST national tournaments later this year.

Fresh from another successful Brixhibition, the Tasmanian Brick Enthusiasts presented the 14-strong Metal Minds team with a $1000 donation last week in an effort to encourage the next generation of scientists and engineers.

TBE vice-president Ray McNamara said the donation would help the team purchase up-to-date lego robotics kits.

“Metal Minds helped us out by putting on an interactive display at Brixhibition, so we’re helping them out as well,” Mr McNamara said.

Metal Minds will enter teams in the national Lego League and Tech Challenge events in December, with both competitions offering world championship spots to the winning team and the winners of the Inspire award.

The Tech Challenge competition represents the final chance for team founder Harry Heathcote to progress through to the world championships in St Louis, USA.

“This is the last time I can actually compete, the limit ends at 19 and then I have to be a mentor but (fellow team member) Kyron Clark is the next generation of team,” Mr Heathcote said.

“We came close last year, we were second place in the Inspire awards and second place overall – if someone else dropped out we would have been the next people to be asked and we would have been saying yes.”
