Over the last 8 months I have been working on Ship-to-Shore (STS) Bulk Container Handling Crane which is scaled to the LEGO 20′ Container that comes with LEGO Maersk  Train set. This Dual Container Grab Mechanism will hand two 40′ Containers, or four 20′ Container, or one 40′ & two 20′ Containers.

Good things do sometimes come from disasters. A couple of days ago I was attempting to lift down approximately 5Kg of assorted LEGO parts when the container took advantage of gravity, and headed straight to the floor. This ended in a completely empty storage container, and LEGO dispersed for metres about. Towards the end of the cleanup, I came across a pair of Green Mudgaurds from a LEGO Technics 8291 Green Dirt Bike.

This is my LEGO Mindstorms EV3 powered Container Handling Crane. It also uses an Arduino Uno to control the lighting effects. This was a long term project, taking some three month of development before I had a reliable Robot capable of operating over long time periods without intervention.
I began the build back in March 2015, but it was June before I had a reliable Robots. The first incarnation was controlled with an Arduino Uno powered EVShield from Mindsensors I was Beta Testing at the stage.

Quad Track: IR-Ball Seeking Crane

This is my LEGO Mindstorms NXT Quad Caterpillar Track Crane, which uses my ‘Ultimate Grab‘ to pick-up and retrieve a Hitechnic Infra-Red Electronic Ball. The Chassis houses 2x NXT Motors to drive the Left and Right pairs of Tracks. A third NXT Motor is used to raise and lower the crane arm. A Small PowerFunctions Motor is used to open and close my Ultimate Crane Claw attachment. The Small PowerFunctions Motor is controlled via a Mindsensors Multiplexer for NXT Motors (NXTMMX-v2). The NXTMMX allows the NXT to control two additional NXT or other LEGO Motors.

Ball Sorting Crane with Ultimate Grabber

As mentioned in my previous post, I’ve been working on-and-off for a couple years now on a reliable LEGO Technics, Crane Claws which will pick up balls reliably. To show case my ‘Ultimate Crane Grab’, I’ve built a LEGO Mindstorms NXT Coloured Ball Sorting Crane, which runs along a geared tressel, which features my Ultimate Crane Grab mechanism! The Crane picks up coloured Ping-Pong Balls, and drops them into cells according to their colour.

The Ultimate LEGO Technics Crane Claw

I’ve been working on-and-off for a couple years now on a reliable LEGO Technics, Crane Claws which will pick up balls reliably. Initially I started of with a two sided clamp type claw with a rounded cage to secure the ball, but this only worked reliably if the claw was directly over the ball. There had to be a better way!

NXT Crane with Ball Sorting Conveyor System

This is a LEGO Mindstorms NXT Crane which delivers balls to a Coloured Ball Sorting Conveyor System. The Ball Sorting Conveyor System uses RC Servo Motors to control the Conveyor and Sorting Mechanism. A single NXT Brick Controls 4 standard 180° RC Servos in the Sorting mechanism and another is used for the Crane’s Grab. Two Full-Rotation 360° Servos are used to drive the two conveyor belts. The Servo Motors are controlled via Mindsensors NXTServo Controller module.

This Lego Mindstorms NXT Gantry Crane Crawls along a suspended cable like a cable-car. It is controlled by the use of a Sound Sensor with a Software Routine that counts hand-claps for selected individual controls.
