LEGO Mindstorms EV3 Ball Chasing Robot using the PixyCAM

PixyCAM Follow the Ball

This article aims to describe how to programme a LEGO Mindstorms EV3 robot that chases things, like a ball in this example. It’s the same robot and program that’s used in the PixyCAM Video below. This robot and program is a good launching point for other projects, and it’s a good introduction to PID control, which is used throughout robotics and engineering in general.

Good things do sometimes come from disasters. A couple of days ago I was attempting to lift down approximately 5Kg of assorted LEGO parts when the container took advantage of gravity, and headed straight to the floor. This ended in a completely empty storage container, and LEGO dispersed for metres about. Towards the end of the cleanup, I came across a pair of Green Mudgaurds from a LEGO Technics 8291 Green Dirt Bike.

Although I find the whole concept of the Great Ball Contraption fascinating, I have to admit that I have not been particularly tempted to build one myself in the past. I can’t say for certain why this was so, save perhaps that I saw too many versions of the standard conveyor built with tracks. Then Akiyuki started creating modules and posting YouTube videos and I was blown away. He has not only created some of the most mechanically complex LEGO creations ever, but he has managed to make them beautiful and mesmerizing at the same time. My favorite of these is the Ball Factory, a stunningly complicated mechanical creation powered by only a single motor. This model not only performs the standard GBC function of moving balls from left to right, but also integrates a similar system of moving buckets which is seamlessly integrated with the ball functions. See for yourself.

This robot is a very clever design using the Mindsensors NXTCam-v4. Actually two of them for stereo vision. The instantaneous response of the Delta Robot design for catching the ball is outstanding choice by the owner Dillon Sharlet!

Ball Sorting Crane with Ultimate Grabber

As mentioned in my previous post, I’ve been working on-and-off for a couple years now on a reliable LEGO Technics, Crane Claws which will pick up balls reliably. To show case my ‘Ultimate Crane Grab’, I’ve built a LEGO Mindstorms NXT Coloured Ball Sorting Crane, which runs along a geared tressel, which features my Ultimate Crane Grab mechanism! The Crane picks up coloured Ping-Pong Balls, and drops them into cells according to their colour.

NXT Crane with Ball Sorting Conveyor System

This is a LEGO Mindstorms NXT Crane which delivers balls to a Coloured Ball Sorting Conveyor System. The Ball Sorting Conveyor System uses RC Servo Motors to control the Conveyor and Sorting Mechanism. A single NXT Brick Controls 4 standard 180° RC Servos in the Sorting mechanism and another is used for the Crane’s Grab. Two Full-Rotation 360° Servos are used to drive the two conveyor belts. The Servo Motors are controlled via Mindsensors NXTServo Controller module.

It sorts out the balls by colour and delivers it to the appropriate colour maker along the conveyor belt, before rolling down to elevator which lifts the balls back to the ball bin to start again. This version sorts 6 colours but is capable of sorting 10+ coloured ball with ease. The software that runs the contraption was written in NXC (Not eXactly C) which is available free from BricxCC.
