LEGO Technic Compatible Helical Gears

The teeth on helical gears are cut at an angle to the face of the gear. When two teeth on a helical gear system engage, the contact starts at one end of the tooth and gradually spreads as the gears rotate, until the two teeth are in full engagement. This gradual engagement makes helical gears operate much more smoothly and quietly than spur gears. For this reason, helical gears are used in almost all car transmissions.

Before I start on LEGO Mindstorms EV3 Alternative Wi-Fi Dongles, I came across a solution to the issue that arises with any Wi-Fi Dongle you use with your EV3 Brick. That is, any Dongle connected will stick out from the side of the brick, getting in the road of everything and allowing it to be easily to knocked from the EV3 Brick’s USB Socket.

After a long wait due to getting the cash together, I’m now the proud owner of two LEGO Mindstorms EV3 Retail Kits (31313). I ended up, after a lot of research in getting my kits from Amazon U.K. as I was able to save US$250, compared to buying them here locally in Australia. For some reason that I haven’t managed to determine, LEGO retails for about 50% more than residents of Europe and the U.S.would expect to pay.

Researchers from North Carolina State University have proposed using swarms of cyborg remote-control cockroaches to map dangerous or uncertain areas like collapsed buildings. Just a few months ago, a team at the same university published research into using Microsoft’s Kinect technology to steer cyborg cockroaches (what they call “biobots”) through a predefined path.

I originally built this LEGO Mindstorms NXT Bug Bot Robot as part of a display at the TAZ-Brick (www.tazbrick.com) Collector Clubs Brixhibition North. The robot proved a hit with the under 10, LEGO Fanatics. Since then I’ve been playing around with the design of my Mindstorms NXT Bug Bot. In this new version I have replaced the 2x RCX type Touch Sensors with 2x NXT type Touch Sensors. The front bumpers had to remodelled to take the NXT Touch Sensors.
